RICK JUSTUS:  Board Vice President

I’m Rick Justus, father of 3 and grandfather of 2, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and Vice President of the Building Ohana Board of Directors.

Throughout my life, I have been an advocate for “person-centered” choices, working to build bridges for those of us who struggle to make sense of community and overcome the barriers to socialization, access, and participation.  I began my career providing direct learning and behavior supports to individuals with autism in community and home settings in the late 1980’s.  I quickly developed a passion to promote positively based supports to those of us who had historically been treated with little respect for their capacity to learn, live and contribute to society.  This led me to seek further education, completing his Master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Utah, where I taught in the public education system in Salt Lake City.  I went on to provide individualized Applied Behavior Analysis supports in Northern California, under the mentorship of Dr. Frank Marone, another Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  Under his tutelage I specialized in developing functional assessments, providing parent and professional training, and implementing person-centered learning and behavior improvement strategies for individuals considered disabled.  Currently, I am Program Director in Spokane, WA for Imagine Behavioral and Developmental Services,  providing ABA services in home, community and clinic settings.

For the last 2 years, it’s been my privilege to be involved in the planning and formation of Building Ohana, a unique nonprofit whose values and purposes align with my life’s work.  We are developing a small, intergenerational, intentional community in which anyone can live and thrive, a place where intentional community involvement and interaction provides valuable natural supports and learning opportunities which ultimately improve everyone's life experiences. Using well researched principles of human behavior, motivation, and positively designed social engagement, Ohana will provide opportunities for all to benefit.
